Potatoes – Ireland to the U.S.
The great Irish emigration to the U.S. in 1846 began because of potatoes. Potatoes, which were a main staple of the Irish diet, suffered a plague that caused a 3-year famine, during which over 1 million people died of hunger. Another 1.5 million (about half of Ireland’s population) emigrated to the U.S. in search of a better place to live.
